Little Discussion about Immigration, Refugees, or Ethnicity Likely on This Weekend's  Sunday Morning
Public Affairs Programs
Saturday, May 30, 2020
Picture

Two stories: have dominated the news this week: the widespread violence spawned by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the continuing health and economic impact on the United States of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Given those two powerful forces, it is unlikely that the five most prominent Sunday morning public affairs programs will address the subjects of immigration, refugees, or ethnicity in a big way during their May 31, 2020, editions.

Notwithstanding the likely dominance on the programs of the Floyd and COVID-19  stories, the presence of several guests this week, including appearances by Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who came to the United States as a Somali refugee, Patrick Gaspard, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; and María Teresa Kumar, who is President of Voto Latino, makes it likely that those subjects will be addressed in some way during this weekend programs.

A sneak peek at the guest lists for the upcoming May 31, 2020, editions of each of the five major broadcast and cable Sunday public affairs programs appears after the jump, along with previews of the likely or possible discussions on those programs about immigration and, refugees.
ABC - This Week:  The headliner guest on the May 31, 2020, edition of ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" program will be Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Also appearing on the program will be Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Trump National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien.

Appearing on the program during its roundtable segment will be Former Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ); Cecilia Vega, Senior White House Correspondent for ABC News; and Patrick Gaspard, President of the Open Society Foundations.

Given the presence of Omar, Gaspard, and Vega on the program, it is possible that there will be discussions about immigration or refugee matters during the program.

CBS - Face the Nation:  The headliner guest on the May 31, 2020,  edition of CBS's "Face the Nation" program will be Benajmin Crump, attorney for the family of George Floyd, whose death while in Minneapolis, Minnesota police custody sparked outrage throughout the nation and a spasm of violence in the city.

Also appearing on the program will be Chicago, Illinois Police Superintendent David Brown; former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb; and KinderCare Chief Executive Officer Tom Wyatt.

Given the lineup of guests, it is unlikely that there will be discussions about immigration or refugee matters during the program.

CNN - State of the Union:  The headliner guests on the May 31, 2020, edition of CNN’s “State of the Union” program will be Melvin Carter, Mayor of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Senator Corey Booker (D-NJ.).

Also appearing on the program this week will be Trump White House National Security Advisor Robert C. O'Brien, Keisha Bottoms, Mayor of Atlanta Georgia, and Governor Larry Hogan (D-MD), .

Given the lineup of guests, it is unlikely that there will be discussions about immigration or refugee matters during the program.

FOX - Fox News Sunday:  The headliner guest on the May 31, 2020,  edition of FOX's "Fox News Sunday" program will be Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison,
.
Also appearing on the program this week will be Andy Skoogman, Executive Director of the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association; Senator Tim Scott (R-SC); and Cornel West, Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard Divinity School,

Appearing during the program's political pundits segment this week will be Michel Anton, Former Trump National Security Spokesman; Former George W. Bush Press Secretary Dana Perino, anchor of the Fox News Channel's "The Daily Briefing" program; and Mo Elleithee of the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service.

Given the lineup of guests, it is unlikely that there will be discussions about immigration or refugee matters during the program.

NBC - Meet the Press:   The headliner guests on the May 31, 2020, edition of NBC’s “Meet the Press” program will be Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Representative Val Demings (D-FL), former Chief of Police for Orlando, Florida, and rumored to be on the shortlist to be selected as presumptive 2020 Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden's running mate.

Also appearing on the program this week will be Muriel Bowser (D), Mayor of the District of Columbia; and Keisha Lance Bottoms (D), Mayor of Atlanta Georgia.

Appearing live from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Atlanta, Georgia, Washington, DC, and Houston Texas will be
NBC News Reporters and Correspondents  Shaquille Brewster, Blayne Alexander, Garrett Haake, and Priscilla Thompson.

Appearing during the political roundtable segment of the program will be Joshua Johnson, MSNBC Anchor; Pat McCrory (R-N.C.), Former Governor of North Carolina; and María Teresa Kumar, President of Voto Latino; and a NBC News Contributor.

Given the appearance on the program of María Teresa Kumar, it seems likely that there will be discussions about immigration or refugee matters during the program.
