The Year's First Action in the House Judiciary Committee, Markup of 14 Homeland Security Bills, and Confirmation Hearings for two Sub-Cabinet Positions Highlight the Week's Immigration- and Refugee-Related Agenda
Monday, March 6, 20117
While Washington continues to await the signing of the long-promised but yet-to-be-executed revision of President Donald J. Trump's embattled January 27, 2017, refugee admissions/travel ban executive order, work in Congress will plod on. Indeed, no less than six hearings, a markup session involving 14 homeland security-related bills, and one floor action that could touch on immigration-, refugee-, or human trafficking-related matters are scheduled for the week beginning March 6, 2017. |
The highlight of the week promises to be a House hearing on the investor visa program and two confirmation hearings for sub-cabinet positions: Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security.
But also on tap is House floor consideration of a revised version of the left-over FY '17 Department of Defense Appropriations Bill. From an immigration perspective, that measure is more notable for what is not in it; appropriators stripped from the bill a provision that was contained in last year's House-passed version of the measure that would have blocked the housing of unaccompanied alien children on military installations.
