Executive Orders
Monday, February 13, 2017
President Donald J. Trump last week pledged that his Administration will take actions this week to increase the security of the United States, implying at various times that the actions could include both new executive orders and revisions to the embattled refugee/travel ban order that currently is the subject of litigation in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. |
The President’s Comments. The President spoke about the matter several times on Friday, February 10th, just a day after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling upholding a lower court’s order temporarily blocking key parts of his refugee/travel ban executive order.
The president first addressed the issue during a joint press conference he participated in with the Japanese Prime Minister. Asked during the press conference what his plans were with regard to the stalled executive order, the President replied, “we'll be doing something very rapidly having to do with the additional security for our country. You'll be seeing that sometime next week. In addition, we will continue to go through the court process and, ultimately, I have no doubt that we’ll win that particular case.” Continuing, the President added, “we'll be going forward and we'll be doing things to continue to make our country safe. It will happen rapidly and we will not allow people into our country who are looking to do harm to our people.”
The President addressed the issue again later on Friday, during an impromptu media availability session that he held on Air Force One. At that time, the President responded to a question about the Administration’s next steps on the stalled executive order, declaring, “We'll win that battle, but we also have a lot of other options, including just filing a brand new order...”
When asked by reporters if such an order would, indeed, be forthcoming, the president said: "It very well could be. We need speed for reasons of security, so it very well could be." The new directive could come Monday or Tuesday, Trump added.
Comments by White House Staff. The news publication, Politico, reported late Friday that “A White House official who asked not to be named said officials were keeping all their options on the table.” Politico quoted the official as saying, “We are reviewing every single option in the court system, including a Supreme Court appeal on the temporary restraining order, and are confident we will prevail on the merits of the case. Additionally, we are actively pursuing other Executive Orders that will keep our country safe from terrorism. These Executive Orders will be signed very soon.”
