Coverage of two high-profile events dominated the coverage of the April 2, 2017, Sunday public affairs programs: the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to be an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States and the continuing, multiple investigations of potential ties between the Trump 2016 campaign and Russian intelligence operatives who were seeking to impact the U.S. presidential election. Discussions about those two subjects left little room for talk about anything else, including immigration and refugees.
In all, the subject of immigration was only mentioned on one of the day's five venerable Sunday morning shows: FOX’s “Fox News Sunday” program, and it only came up briefly, in discussions about whether President Trump’s request for funds to construction of a wall between the U.S. and Mexico could result in a government shutdown.

When asked if he is willing to risk a government shutdown at the end of fiscal year 2017 over President Trump’s request for funding to construct a wall between the United States and Mexico, Senator McConnell suggested that funding for the wall and other controversial matters did not have to be resolved in fiscal year 2017 because those issues will be debated again in the context of the fiscal year 2018 appropriations process. When pressed, he asserted, “we’re going to work all of this out on a bipartisan basis.” Continuing, he said, “The Democrats will be fully involved in the discussion, and so will the President.” He added, “We’ll work it out and avoid any kind of catastrophic event.”

The AP’s Pace said of a potential government shutdown-inducing showdown in the coming weeks between the President and Democrats over the President’s request to fund his border wall, “I think that could be a real pressure point.” Pace went on to suggest that the President could have problems “on both sides” of the political aisle in his quest for support for funding the wall and that failure to secure funding could be problematic for him because “this was one of the clearest problems of that campaign.” |
