Governor Kasich did not address the subject of immigration during his appearance on the program. But Senator Menendez did, commenting on the question of how President Trump will treat DACA recipients, as well as on the expanded interior immigration enforcement priorities set into place by President Trump.
During his appearance, Senator Menendez said of the President and DACA, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus has reached out to the president on immigration but that he, himself, has not yet done so. Senator Menendez commented that President Trump's expression of sympathy for DACA recipients may well be "the only heartfelt element of his immigration policy." After extolling the virtues of DACA recipients, the Senator said, "we need to take advantage of their human intellect and capacity to help America." He added, "I hope the President is committed to that. Certainly, if he is, we will work with them." The Senator said, however, that "I am concerned about his broader immigration policy." He said that "the latest reports that I've read about what is being proposed is in essence a mass deportation effort where you indiscriminately pursue any immigrant -- |
not criminal immigrants, which I certainly support the deportation of.." Continuing, the Senator said that under the Trump proposals that he has seen, "anyone who is found in an undocumented status would ultimately be apprehended and deported with due process totally eroded," He said that "that's not only going to lead to massive deportations that are going to every element of our society and our economic sector, as well, but also it's going to create the possibilities -- which we have seen in the past in immigration raids -- of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents being unlawfully detained in violation of their constitutional rights." He concluded by asserting that "the broad discretion that is being talked about giving ICE agents is going to be a real challenge in our country."
The participants in the program's the political roundtable segment this week were former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), former State Representative Nina Turner (D-OH), CNN Contributor and Republican advisor Amanda Carpenter, and former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander (R-MO). Limbaugh asserted that the President needs to shore up our borders in order to "keep his supporters on board." He said that people who voted for Trump viewed the loss of control of our borders because "that is the primary area where people who voted for Trump felt we are on the way to losing our country."
Limbaugh went on to declare that "we've even lost the definition of immigration." Continuing, Limbaugh said, "immigration today, if you listen to the left, equals anybody who wants to come into the country should be allowed. That's not what immigration is; that's illegal immigration, and we ought to all oppose it." Limbaugh complained that "immigration has been defined now as people flooding the country who are noncitizens," and he said that "we are just ruining our opportunity to stay together as a people with a common culture." |
Appearing during the program's political pundits segments were Karl Rove, former Bush White House Senior Advisor and Fox News Contributor; Mo Elleithee, Executive Director of Georgetown University's Institute of Politics and Public Service and a Fox News Contributor; Kimberley Strassel, author, member of The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board; and Charles Lane, editorial writer for The Washington Post and Fox News Contributor.
Rove addressed the subject of immigration briefly, suggesting that the process of issuing and implementing the President's January 27th refugee admissions and travel ban executive order was chaotic, in part, because "they don't have a process in place that is collaborative, that puts cabinet secretaries with disagreements over White House policy in front of the president to make their argument. They were rushed. They did it by using congressional staffers who didn't tell their bosses. And as a result, they are going to have to have a redo." |
